Organic Farming
We have chosen a sustainable system that respects the welfare needs of the Land, the Environment, Animals and People

We do not use (and aren't allowed to use) any pesticides or artificial fertilisers. Natural methods are used to control weeds and encourage natural predators to control pests.

The maintenance of tradition hedges are an integral part of a sustainable organic system. Hedges provide a natural habitat for small animals, birds and insects, who can act as natural pest controllers.

Organic Sheep & Cows eat grass and corn (Barley & Oats) Grown on the farm. Some feed is bought in but only from a source approved by one of the Organic certifying Bodies - Organic farmers & Growers or The Soil Association
Organic Farming methods and standards promote good animal husbandry and welfare. In the Summer all livestock graze the fields. In the Winter it is too cold and too wet for the Cows so they are kept in covered  open straw yards. The Sheep are only brought in to the Lambing Shed shortly before they are due to lamb, to be sure they are all well fed and dry. The lambing shepherd can keep a close watch and if necessary help them to lamb.
Under an Organic system there is less need for the use of animal medicines & antibiotics. Animals welfare is of course paramount, and  the treatment of animals is very strictly controlled.

What Does "ORGANIC" Mean ?

When applied to food and other products the  word "ORGANIC" is a legally defined label. It is regulated at a European Level under  European Food Directives. The United Kingdom Register of Organic Food Standards UKROFS, a government controlled body, regulates its use. They licence ORGANIC certification bodies such as Organic Farmers & Growers or the Soil Association, who in turn licence & inspect Farmers (Producers) and food processors to ensure that they adhere to the standards set by UKROFS.
